My local environment in and around East Sutherland is my main focus in landscape. This is where I've lived for over 40 years now and it is part of my visual experience. The experience of getting out, absorbing the surroundings and on the spot study is invaluable . Sketches completed in a short time often under less than perfect circumstances are on the whole more meaningful than photoswhich have their place but are not a substitute.I also sketch on holiday (mainly in France ) where differences in light and terrain make their own challenges.
